Damn, I'm Color Blind !!

Most colorblind people are men.

COLOR BLIND VIEW

Normal view.

How I saw the game, quit watching after first quarter.

I'm colorblind, so is my brother. My maternal grandfather, Ben Greiner was colorblind. My mother carried the X chromosome for colorblindness that both my brother and I inherited.
Color blind test diagram.
I never knew I was colorblind until the 7th grade, I saw no number on some of the diagrams. The school nurse asked if I dressed myself, or if my mother laid out my clothes? I dressed myself.
One in 12 men are colorblind, while only one in 200 women are. That’s due to the fact that the red-green variant of colorblindness (in which people have trouble telling red, green, and sometimes other shades apart) — which is by far the most common type — is usually passed down via genes located on the X chromosome. Men only have one X chromosome and women have two, and in women, both X chromosomes need to have the relevant genetic issues for a woman to be born with red-green colorblindness. Blue-yellow colorblindness (confusing blue with green and yellow with red) and complete colorblindness (the inability to see any colors), meanwhile, are passed down via other chromosomes and affect men and women at roughly the same rate.

If you’re color blind, you may have trouble seeing:

  • The difference between colors
  • How bright colors are
  • Different shades of colors

Symptoms of color blindness are often so mild that you may not notice them. And since we get used to the way we see colors, many people with color blindness don’t know they have it.

People with very serious cases of color blindness might have other symptoms, too — like quick side-to-side eye movements (nystagmus) or sensitivity to light.

The Ishihara color blind test was invented by Dr. Shinobu Ishihara in 1916 while he held a military position in the Japanese Army. The test was originally developed exclusively for use by the Japanese Army, but became more widespread in 1917.

To the normally sighted person, a rainbow features all the colors of the rainbow. For many color blind people, however, a rainbow only appears to have 2 or 3 colors: blue and yellow. To a color blind person, the green light on a stoplight may appear white or even blue, while the red and yellow lights may look similar to each other. Many color blind people struggle to match their black and blue socks and can find themselves a little mismatched from time to time.

Color Blind People

  • Robert Redford - American actor
  • Sting - British musician
  • George Clinton - American musician
  • Jack Nicklaus - American professional golfer
  • Howie Mandel - American entertainer
  • Eddie Redmayne - British actor
  • Prince William - Prince of England, Duke of Cambridge
  • Meat Loaf - American musician
  • Mark Zuckerberg - Facebook CEO and founder
  • Christopher Nolan - English director
  • Fred Rogers - American television actor, host of Mr. Rogers
  • Bing Crosby - American musician
  • Roger Staubach - NFL Quarterback, US Naval Academy Graduate
  • During his junior year at the Naval Academy, Staubach's color-blindness was detected and he was commissioned directly into the Supply Corps, which did not necessitate being able to tell the difference between red (port) and green (starboard) lights or to discern the color differences in electrical circuitry.
  •  Restricted Careers for Colorblind People

Many people do not know they are colorblind till they decide to pursue their dream career, and at times that career path requires a color-vision test.

The result can come as a total shock! The whole livelihood of a person depends on passing the test.

Professions: Pilot, medicine, industrial engineering, firefighting, doctor, navy, military, electrician, public driver, designer and law enforcement, police, artist, chef, florist and many more restrict or even ban colorblind people from some positions. But we can’t blame them, can we?!

I have experienced no major problems in life due to colorblindness. I have adapted and compensated. I had major problems with crayons. I know the green (GO) traffic light is on bottom, or the last light on the right.

I have always had problems with electrical wiring, and once blew out a tape deck I was installing in my car. I couldn't distinguish between the purple and blue wires. Tell me the street address of the house or say 4th house on left, don't give me the color. I look at the shape of the piece, not the color when doing a jigsaw puzzle.

I had some problems with chemistry lab experiments in high school. If my wife wasn't home, I asked my daughters if my suit, tie, and shirt were color coordinated. I always relied upon the sales clerk when I was buying a clothing outfit for a
Christmas or birthday gift for my wife.

There are much worse things in life.
