the AJ SCHMITT and Sons Farm throughout the years

Much more than  farming, it was about  respecting each other,  responsibility, hard work, teamwork, when it got hard,  work harder, family above all other.



The AJ Schmitt and Sons Farm
can trace its origination to Rosedale,NY Albert & Margaret Kapplemeir
Schmitt operated a vegetable farm on Merrick Blvd,
they were both of German Heritage. Anthony Schmitt 
was one of their sons (all became farmers in adulthood) and the last to operate the farm before it was sold in 1947. Anthony & his wife Cecilia moved their family; Joseph, Jean, Anthony Jr., & Roger to Farmingdale NY.
They purchased a farm in Melville located on Ruland Rd.

AJ Schmitt & Sons Farm was established.
They sold their produce consisting of a variety of green leafy & root vegetables.
The produce was trucked into various NYC wholesale produce markets

 
and directly to some supermarkets with warehouses located in the NYC metro area, 
The original 25 acre plot was supplemented with rental acreage in the nearby Melville area.

The farm ceased operations in 1996 when the children of Anthony & Cecelia sold the property for development purposes.

This is not a fictional tale, nor a little bit of reality and then embellished for a TV movie, no it's about two men , actually three men, of different economic backgrounds, races, ethnicity, and how they didn't see differences  but commonality. The commonality was they were all football men, Chicago Bears, one a coach/owner, the other two players. They had a common goal, win football games for the Chicago Bears. Actually, maybe win a few games for the Bears, because in the late 1960's the Bears weren't a very good team. Gale Sayers was one of the best running backs to ever play in the NFL, Brian Piccolo was second string all the way. He had the heart and determination better than not only of most in the NFL, but better than 99% of the citizens in the United States. Nothing stopped that guy except cancer. 4th of July , Pathmark, Cross Bronx Expressway, AJ SCHMITT AND SONS.

Many of you have heard of my infamous first solo driving of one of our market trucks on the road. ( Ref :  AUGUST 1974    But , with the 4th of July holiday weekend, my mind remembers the 4th of July weekend, 1976. Pathmark supermarkets had given AJ SCHMITT and SONS a large vegetable order for the holiday weekend.  July 2, 1976 was a Friday, and thus we could fulfill that order. Hunts Point Terminal Produce was not operational on early Saturdays or Sundays mornings. We never made trips to HPTP on Fridays or Saturdays. Thus, both trucks could be used to deliver the huge order to Pathmark warehouse, 60 miles away in Carteret NJ. And all farm workers could help harvest that order. We had a few high school guys , my brother and I included, working on the farm that summer. One of us would take a day off, and it would be rotated among the high school guys.
