Communication today.
Social Media; texting ; etc...a blessing or a curse to communicating with others (originally March 2018) !!
I think I need to post every few months, not just for younger people, but for all people. Texting, emails, etc are not personal communications, no body language, facial communication, all one way...
As usual there are two sides of the coin when discussing this topic; especially if you are a baby boomer or older, and then if you're a millennial or younger. As a baby boomer, social media has reconnected me with many from the past that I would never had connected with again. But, rather quickly you only stay in real contact with your true friends from that age. Real contact are phone calls, face person to person meetings,
and discovering more about that person than simply how long they've been married, how may many kids, where they're living, or what is their profession. Yes, we're glad to see that others are doing well, not so glad when we find out so-so died or is still caught up in high school or college years.
Texting is fine as a tool to find out where & when we're meeting, or if you arrived safely. But, those younger than baby boomers use it as a main communication tool. You never even have to hear someone's voice and listen to the excitement or sadness in their voice tone. Emoji's ? Really?
There is something to be said in having a casual conversation with someone, that you don't get via electronic communications. I often spoke with my in-laws sometimes a minute or so, sometimes fifteen minutes or longer when I answered the phone and they were wanting to speak with my wife. I learned much about their day, week, ups and downs. Today if I call my daughters it is not to a shared house phone, but their individual cell phone. I cannot remember the last time I spoke with my son in-laws on the phone. I really don't know their likes, dislikes, joys, or sorrows, as I only see them at holiday times or once or twice throughout the year. Then the conversations are not deep because we are rushed for time. Even though my in-laws and parents lived miles away, I could tell by speaking on the telephone with each of them, once or a few times a week, what they were doing and if they were excited or sad.
Maybe today's younger generation have insulated themselves, and are OK with the current mode of communication. Not I, I loved knowing what made my parents &in-laws, happy, where they stood on current issues, when I or they could make the next visit. Oh, how I wish I could pick up the phone to speak to any of the three who are no longer on earth. But, I can only do so via prayer, and it's a one way conversation.
If I was President, I would declare one day each month, NO TEXT, NO EMAIL, NO SOCIAL MEDIA personal communications. Who knows? There may be less violence in the world, and maybe less social isolation.
Good day, just my two cents worth. I hope you enjoy my blog.
