UBER, TAXES, JUDGING OTHERS
UBER, TAXES, JUDGING OTHERS..
Friends, family,
Much in the news & social media these days about harassment. But, something else has been bothering me. At a recent meal out in a restaurant , the discussion was about Uber, cost, convience & tipping etc. I said I have had pleasant experiences and that tipping is now allowed. Drivers have always been polite and on time.
I also stated that Uber failed to educate their drivers that driving costs, gasoline, maintenance etc are tax deductible , or by the use of a flat mileage expense. I said my recent driver was a young Afro American woman, and she had no idea. I quickly educated her on this, she knew she had to declare income because Uber provides a 1099, but knew nothing about deducting expenses.
One in my party scoffed , and said "Yeah, if she even files an income tax return " I said the IRS will follow up on 1099 income statements issued by UBER. The person in my party answered with a laugh, yeah right. I let it go, but how extremely racist.
I've professionally prepared taxes, and know others who either under report income or overstate business expense or personal deductions. They know better, are middle class, & educated. Yet, I bet that person in my dining party wouldn't make a comment about non payment of taxes by those citizens.
It irks me that people make such racist remarks, yet overlook more grevious cheating by others in their own socio economic class.
I'll just let it be, and pray that people will see their own racist attitudes. Just my observation, I know I am guilty of racist thoughts, but am very cognizant of that and suppress as best I can. I am no saint, as most of you can attest to.
Enjoy the days ahead of beautiful weather.
Tony

THE WIDOW'S MITE
- Gordon Lindsey
Mark tells that we often label the tale of the widow’s mite (Mark 12:41-44). It recounts an incident in Jesus’ life, which Mark places in the events of Holy Week.
Jesus is sitting in the Jerusalem temple, watching the crowds who enter. Many drop a money gift into the temple’s cash box. Those who are affluent drop sizeable amounts. Then a widow makes her donation. It is a tiny sum: just two small coins that are valued what our translations call a penny. (It is hard to know how to value this sum in today’s currency. But think of it as a miniscule value, like two dollar bills.)
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus comments that she has given the most of all. The rich have given large sums, but those sums amount to no great sacrifice for them. The widow, however, has given everything she has, in fact, everything she has to live on.
